I get to spend today with some pretty awesome women: minister’s wives. And I honestly don’t say that because I’m one of them. In fact, when it comes down to it, I am so in awe of these women not because I believe that I am in league with them. Instead, I am in awe of them because I know what goes on behind the scenes in the ministry. I know what they face. I know their struggles and their pains. And yet, I see their perseverance. I know how many times I have wanted to give up and walk away. But these women remind me to keep on going.
And today I get to soak all of that up. That’s downright exciting to me!
My hope is that I can encourage some of them, too. Because when it comes down to the heart of what I love to do, encouragement is a big part of that, combined with discipleship and pointing others to the Word of God.
Have you ever thought about what really excites you? We are commanded to go into this world and make disciples. (Matthew 28:19-20) That isn’t just about the “baptizing them in the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” It’s also about the next part: “teaching them to obey all that I commanded you.” None of us can get away from that command. But, I believe that God uses the very core of what excites us to best accomplish this command in our lives.
In my life, one way He uses me is by allowing me to encourage other women. It might be through a chat about homeschooling. It might be here on my blog. It could be through teaching a class or being a part of a Bible study. Or, it could be through something as fun as today’s minister’s wives gathering.
Don’t get me wrong. Often fulfilling the Great Commission requires a great deal of challenge and sacrifice. It means stepping beyond what we can do on our own. It requires a boldness that cannot come solely from within ourselves. We have to depend on the power of the Holy Spirit within us, and we have to move outside the realm of comfort and ease.
But, God delights in seeing our joy. He created us and knows what excites us. And I think there are many times He allows us to fulfill the Great Commission – especially the “teaching them” part – in purely delightful ways.
Today I am gathering with women who are much like me in many ways. But, even as I enjoy their company and delight in the fellowship, I pray that God uses me to fulfill His command to grow His kingdom. I pray that this day won’t just be about enjoyment, but about obedience as well.
